AFRICAN BLACKWOOD

African Blackwood, Dalbergia melanoxylon has a beautiful name in Swahili, Mpingo. The wood is extremely hard with a fine grain. It is commonly used for woodwind instruments and is very good for machining.

The unfinished, turned wood is a mid to dark brown with a dark grain that is minutely deeper than the surface.

FInished, the wood has a deep sheen, occasionally dark brown but almost always black.
